- Friday, August 8: Glasslands, NYNT presents Heavy Trash, Five Dollar Priest, Witch Hats, and Woman

New York Night Train more than thrilled to bring Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray's way out rockabilly project Heavy Trash to Brooklyn Friday for a rare NYC appearance. Anyone who knows anything about Jon Spencer, or had the thrill of witnessing his vigorous showmanly performances with Pussy Galore, Gibson Brothers, Honeymoon Killers, Boss Hog, Blues Explosion, and many more, or most recently with Heavy Trash at Glasslands a couple of months back where the sold-out house made him come back for encore after encore, are well aware that the man is much more than one of the most prolific, distinctive, and stylish forces in contemporary music, but, briefly and bluntly, he remains a rare rock'n'roll heart who brings it like no other every time. Verta-Ray, a truly unsung hero of the NYC underground, isn't only responsible for the lightning-fast, yet elegantly tight and soulful guitar incisions in Speedball Baby and Madder Rose, but is also the unseen hand behind a number of classic recordings by everyone from the Subsonics to Andre Williams. Tonight their band includes a supergroup rhythm section consisting of Yoko Ono, John Cale, Ray Davies skin pounder Phil Hernandez, and neighborhood surf/rockabilly legend and former Coyote master, the sinister Simon Chardiet on upright bass. While rockabilly is certainly their main frame of reference, this subterranean switchblade quartet zigzags around and beyond generic constraints to create a raw frenzy that flirts with tradition but remains undeniably vital and immediate. Catch it while you can because these jetsetters rarely play NYC shows!

Five Dollar Priest, whose recent shows were supporting friends like Mudhoney and Gogol Bordello here and Wire abroad, is NYC's latest and greatest underground noise supergroup. Fronted by the actor/poet/drummer/singer/all-around entertainer, the mighty Speedball Baby's Ron Ward, the Priest also includes legends like the star of "Death Valley 69," Sonic Youth/Pussy Galore drummer Bob Bert, the gargantuan guitar monster who is without a doubt one of New York Night Train's favorite guitarists of all time, Swans' Norman Westberg that - who's massive tone and atonal harmony defined the band's classic 1980s sound (not to mention his infinitely innovative work with the likes of Foetus, Lydia Lunch, and Heroine Sheiks), the fat dirty bounce of Heroine Sheiks/Molotov Cocktail bassist George Porifiris, and Texas avant-jazz clarinetist/man-about-town Mr. Patrick Holmes. Together these Size Queens conjure a noirish, playful, weird rock with no shortage of experimentalism that, while a step beyond, remains consistent to the rough individualistic post-No Wave downtown aesthetic that the members have continuously been a primary force redefining since the 1980s.

Tonight also marks the first New York gig ever for Melbourne, Australia's Witch Hats- a wild young band of hooligans whose American debut (produced by Birthday Party's Phill Calvert) will appear on In the Red in a few months time. Tonight is also the release party for the band's new 7" on New York Night Train Recordings, "Hellhole"/"Revolution." While firmly rooted in the Scientists/Birthday Party/Lubricated Goat dark heavy reverbed-out down under tradition, the band's ungodly rumble is based on chunkier riffs - perhaps in the tradition of fellow-countrymen AC/DC, Rose Tatoo, and the mighty Radio Birdman - but probably what I'm referring to can be more accurately described as a catchy "Touch Me I'm Sick" grunge hook element – definitely their own take on one of the more under-explored arena’s of the post-punk canon. And look out NYC ladies, these juvenile delinquents who take press pictures in their undies splattered in blood may be seeking some lodging the next few nights.

Openers Woman, led by the twin vocal/guitar towers of Australian native Kristian Brenchley and Mexico City's Brett W Schultz, and featuring the skinniest and coolest looking rhythm section in town, the black-clad Skeleton Boy and Alex Velasquez, remain one of the rawest, most brutal, and least compromised ensembles in the tri-state area. But don't be frightened, its only rock'n'roll! Get there early. Doors at 8pm/show at 9 sharp!
