October 13 - 15: Last CBGB weekend ever: Fri: Dictators, Sic F*cks, Bullys / Sat:The Dictators, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein accoustic, The Waldos / Sun: Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, Tony Shanahan (SOLD OUT)

CBGB goes out with much of the same cast from its origins three decades ago. While I think it’s important to mention that this is the last weekend before they load up the physical location and move it to Vegas, for me this dump died years ago.

It’s been more than a decade since any kind of scene crystallized around the venue. Can you imagine someone that actually lives in New York saying, “Let’s see what’s going on at CB’s tonight”? Benefits, nostalgia trips, and other oddities from the last year or so withstanding, it’s also been some time since decent bills appeared on a regular basis or the venue in any way attempted to connect with the local underground music community. Contrary to the spirit of adventure that made the venue what it is in our cultural memories, this great room with an excellent sound system and truckloads of history got the worst bands in the tri-city area on a regular basis out of sheer cynicism and laziness - making all of their dough off of tourists, souvenirs and expensive drinks.

There were a few moments where it looked like it would turn around – particularly the year or so when Dave Burton began booking nights around 2000. In that short period, thanks exclusively to the shows Dave promoted, a number of the acts that actually went on to better things, from Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Bad Wizard, put in some of their earliest NYC performances at the sinking ship. Dave soon threw his hands in the air and, during the last few years, as the sleepy music scene rose to became one of the finest in the world, CBGB missed out almost entirely.

All three final nights are sold out. I was thinking of trying to get on the list - but I would never miss this last chance to exhibit one of my three rusty variations on my sneaking-into-CB’s technique for the last time ever. My eyes are misting over as I close this and warn you that, whatever you do, don’t take pieces of the walls or stage or, the golden egg, the men’s room toilet home with you… That wouldn’t be very punk rock of you at all…
