Precious Metal: Sahra Motalebi, Yoshiko Ohara – Lit $6

You can add Curran Reynolds’ Precious Metal to the spectrum of NYC Monday institutions like Reverend Vince’s residency at Black Betty or Les Paul’s at The Iridium. Reynolds, both an employee of Earache Records and the drummer for Wetnurse, is ideally suited for hosting what is quickly becoming regarded as New York’s premier metal party. And it’s about time. Think not of all of the Motley Crue you’ve had to endure in Lit’s basement over the years, but instead, the dark, the noisy, the atonal, and, of course, the loud and heavy.

Tonight’s party is unique not only in that it consists exclusively of solo performances, but that both are by women in a rapidly expanding but typically male-dominated genre. Yoshiko Ohara, originally hailing from Osaka, is the masterful and inimitable vocalist for avant doom lords and Precious Metal regulars Bloody Panda. Sahra Motalebi is a lovely and intense Texas expat whose vigorous gust is as difficult to file under metal as it is to classify as any other generic category. Reynolds will of course be spinning the greatest and the latest dirges upstairs. Can you handle it?
