-Thu, Dec 31: NYC, Motor City (FREE!) / Home Sweet Home ($5) / Cake Shop ($15): NY Night Train 3rd Annual Lower East Side New Years Marathon way past dawn!, 9pm – noon, FREE and up: New York Night Train’s 3rd annual Lower East Side New Years consists of three interlocking events within a few blocks of each other (Cake Shop, Home Sweet Home, and Motor City) starting at 9pm New Years Eve and moving on until NOON New Years Day! Motor City and Home Sweet Home have 24 hour licenses so its totally kosher to pretend you’re in New Orleans and bounce around all night. Here’s what’s on our menu:

– bands (Screaming Females, A.R.E.Weapons, Frankie and the Outs, etc)
– DJs (Jonathan Toubin all night long in all three locations, Smashed! Blocked!’s Josh Styles, Caleb of Sacred Bones Records, etc.)
– unique acts such as comedian Jeff Jensen (Matador Records) doing his latest ventriloquist act, superstar go go performance artist Anna Copa Cabanna (!), and Quality of My Life fanzine’s 2009 year-end awards!
– open bars and drink specials

And, if you have enough energy to keep up, NYC’s hardest working DJ, Mr Jonathan Toubin, will be back at Home Sweet Home at 10pm New Years Day for his weekly Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down maximum rock and soul 45 dance party.

Fri, Jan 1: NYC, Home Sweet Home: Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down New Years w/Mr. Jonathan Toubin, 10:30pm, FREE: Start the new year off right with a down-home Shakin’ All Over maximum rock and soul party with black-eyed peas, collared greens, and corn bread then shake and shimmy to wild 45rpm party favors – obscurities, novelties, and classics with a pumpin’ heartbeat from the 1950s to the present – soul, garage, girl groups, New Orleans beat, glam, punk, freakbeat, rockabilly, ye ye, new and local underground rockers – supreme jams from across the board performed, recorded, and now re-assembled with both rawness and immediacy for your dancing pleasure. Recent guest DJs have included David Johansen, Jon Spencer, Ian Svenonius, and many more. Don’t let Mr. T get lonely during this extra-long haul!


Sat, Jan 2: Brooklyn Museum: Target First Saturdays party series w/dancing w/DJ Mr Jonathan Toubin (9pm – 11pm), Cordero (live 5pm), Daphne Brooks (lecture 6pm), Stepping Out Studios (dance class 6pm), live nude model sketching (6:30), Hedwig and the ANgry Inch (6:30), Masquerade Ball (7pm), Gallery talk on transformation theme in Bddhist art (7:30), John Sellers discussing his book “Perfect From Now On: How Indie Rock Saved My Life” (9pm), karaoke (9pm), 5pm – 11pm, all ages, FREE: New York Night Train’s Mr. Jonathan Toubin participates in the kickoff of the new monthly Brooklyn Museum Party, First Saturdays. This evening’s theme is “Transformation” and will include a live performance by bilingual indie rock band Cordero (5pm), a lecture about the women of funk rock and the aesthetics of James Brown by Princeton English/African-American Studies professor Daphne Brooks, group waltz lessons in preparation for the evening’s Masquerade Ball by Stepping Out Studios (6pm), “a live (and quite possibly nude) model will be available to sketch” (6:30-8:30pm), a screening of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” John Cameron Mitchell’s 2001 film about an East Berlin boy who undergoes a sex-change operation in order to marry and flee to the West (6:30), The Masquerade Ball (7pm), a talk on the theme of transformation in Buddhist art (7:30pm), a discussion by John Sellers of his new book “Perfect From Now On: How Indie Rock Saved My Life.” (9pm), Karaoke (9pm), and a dance party featuring New York Night Train conductor Jonathan Toubin’s trademark 45 rpm “maximum rock and soul” sound (9pm – 11pm).
