NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN’S SOUL CLAP CLASSICS VOL. 1
by Mr. Jonathan Toubin

On a cold October 2010 night in Portland, OR, DJ BEYONDA recorded New York Night Train conductor DJ MR. JONATHAN TOUBIN’s ecstatic mix of some of favorites spun at his world-famous SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF’s recent west coast tour. The DJ reluctantly digitized this to offer a representation of the quality, breadth, and style of music transitioned together at the his most notable event. Though assembled exclusively from original 45s from over four decades ago, you will find this high-speed chase fast, fresh, eclectic, and beat-heavy enough to keep up with the contemporary club DJ environment – but raw, wild, and gritty enough to appeal to all the rock’n’rollers. Executed for the dancers, some liberties are taken with the pitch, intro’s and outro’s – yet it’s deliberately a song-conscious mix that leaves the integrity of all of these stellar compositions intact. And, even though the wav file (and particularly the mp3) can’t by nature come close to the rich sonic depth of the original 45rpm masters when heard live, this recording is a solid attempt to approximate the huge sound of the Soul Clap as accurately as possible for the digital medium. The architecture of this beautiful beast involves everything from frenzied r&b to funky fuzz to top-notch European and American garage band stabs at Motown and Stax – but is based on pounding New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago, Chicano, western, southern, and, yes, even northern soul (just a dash)- winding down as every party does slow and sweet. Catch the SOUL CLAP!
