This was recorded directly from the 1966 Dunwich 45: Things To Come “I’m Not Talkin'”
If this is a weary hungover Monday for ya, take some this! It’s guaranteed to wake ya up! Wowza!
In 1964 bluesy jazz pianist/singer/songwriter Mose Allison recorded the original version on his “The Word From Mose” LP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPplVl42Nzg). Like “Parchman Farm” which was later heavied up by Blue Cheer and “Young Man Blues” which got a sweaty workout from The Who, Allison’s original is in this case restrained, classy, and cool. The first recording session after Jeff Beck joined The Yardbirds and helped take music to a new level of urgency and distortion in 1965, the band took Allison’s “I’m Not Talking,” rocked it up, threw in some heart-attack dynamics, and plopped this firecracker onto their “For Your Love” LP as the second track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj5W1XJYxKI). In 1966 Things to Come, a group of teenagers from Wheaton, Illinois, the same small Chicago suburb that produced John Belushi, took a stab at The Yardbirds’ version for their Dunwich Records recording debut. This snarly masterpiece is the ultimate conclusion – explosive, punk, and light years ahead of its time. The speed, intensity, and general propulsion pushes this rollercoaster to Motorhead proportions – stopping abruptly, sputtering on the breaks, and then relentlessly barreling around the curves all the way to the final stab. And this 45 sounds huge! Like a lot of the amazing 60s garage bands brought into the public eye for the first time on “Back From the Grave” or in this case “Pebbles” (Vol 10), these guys only made one record that didn’t sell and then broke up. I’m so grateful they left this for us…
