Curtis Knight and the Squires (W/Jimi Hendrix): Hornet’s Nest (RSVP, 1966): Today’s YouTube Party Platter

NY Night Train just started a record of the day playlist on YouTube – the NYNT Daily Party Platter Hit up NYNT YouTube channel every day to see what’s cookin’…

A couple of years before he became the Jimi Hendrix we’ve all experienced, the struggling chitlin circuit sideman/session guitarist met Harlem r&b bandleader Curtis Knight in the lobby of the NYC hotel where they both were residing and started playing together. Hendrix would spend a good part of 1965 and 1966 with Knight before setting off on his own. In addition to making a handful of great recordings, they also both had very cool hairdos.

“Hornet’s Nest” is the first recording where Hendrix gets a writing credit and while this is still a ways before his English adventure, you can definitely tell he deserves authorship as his signature sound is already in place. While there was no shortage of overdriven guitar in 1966 pop and rock music, this wild heavy fuzzbomb was definitely on the edge of what r&b bands could record at this time. Riff rock, organ chaos, and guitar freedom meet steady 1-4-5 geometric r&b dance groove – sort of like if a sci-fi Booker T and the MG’s went proto-metal…

And a wild thing!

You’re listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it’ll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I’m just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well – so you can view this as a part of our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.

Get your enjoys,
