Barbara Lynn “You Can’t Buy My Love” (Jamie, 1965): NY Night Train YouTube Party Platter
NY Night Train just started uploading an original 45rpm vinyl record every day on YouTube – the NYNT Daily Party Platter Playlist Hit up NYNT YouTube channel every day to see what’s cookin’…
Hey hey Texas, I’m on my way to the home state to party you down at Austin’s Last Splash Swim Club tomorrow (http://do512.com/events/2015/7/26/last-splash-swim-club-jonathan-toubin-the-numero-group-djs). Today’s track is by one of my favorite all-time artists – Texas or otherwise – BARBARA LYNN! And this just may be her best dance jam (of many of my all-time favorite jams). “You Can’t Buy My Love” is so great for the dance floor not only for the drum break it starts with that makes it such an easy transition but the way those up front drums beat hits up against a bouncy Texas tejano 2/4 bass wall in a similar fashion to the way Huey P. Meaux-produced Tribe Records label-mates Sir Douglas Quintet were fond of doing in the same period. Like the Sir Doug, this one is a supreme example 1960s Texas sonic fusion food au go go – where Tex Mex meets the discotheque meets soul – with a raw edge… And, as always with Barbara Lynn, what killer masterfully delivered vocals…
Born and raised in the fertile music soil of the biggest point of East Texas’ Golden Triangle, Beaumont, Barbara Lynn is the complete package – a top-notch singer, songwriter, and guitarist with buckets of style, beauty, and charisma. Lynn’s prolific recording career was sparked when Huey P. Meaux brought the 19-year-old songstress into Cosimo Matassa’s legendary studio to cut her own composition “You’ll Lose a Good Thing” in 1962. “Good Thing” took off to Number One R&B and climbed up in the Top Ten of the U.S. Pop Charts, was covered by everybody who is anybody, wound up in John Waters “Hairspray” and other flicks, and became Lynn’s signature song. Dozens and dozens of amazing sides followed over the years including “You Left The Water Running” which was later popularized by Otis Redding, “Oh Baby (We’ve Got A Good Thing Goin’)” which the Stones took a stab at on “Rolling Stones Now” all the way up to Moby’s sample of the intro to “I’m A Good Woman” on 2002’s “Another Woman.” Barbara Lynn is still plays live and is still one of the good things out there.

You’re listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it’ll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I’m just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well – so you can view this as a part of our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.
Get your enjoys,
