While the LPs “No New York,” “Buy,” and “Off-White” remain timeless and daring and have earned their rightful spot in the canon via so many books, documentaries, and international reissues and compilations, James’ live shows are also the stuff of legend. Exploding onto the fabled CBGB / Max’s Kansas City scenes with his unique combination of sweat-drenched James Brown dance pyrotechnics, blood-soaked Iggy Pop confrontational recklessness, and skronky post-Albert Ayler saxophone brutality, since day one James’ performance stood out from the pack and left blurry footprints all over the borders black and white and art and trash and past and present.
