Johnny “Guitar” Watson “Looking Back” (Escort, 1961): Today’s NY Night Train YouTube Party Platter

NY Night Train’s Daily Party Platter YouTube just kicked into gear last week! Visit the playlist every day to see what’s cookin’…

Directly from the original 1961 Escort Records 45 Johnny Watson “Looking Back”
Another real mother for ya by the original gangster of love!

“I was looking back to see if she was looking back to see if I was looking back at her”

Recognize this one from Spencer Davis Group? John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers? Dr. Feelgood? Another case of “how did these English guys find this limited record on such an obscure label”?

Though Johnny Guitar Watson’s 1950s recordings are some of the finest music ever made, for my dance-floor purposes, the early 1960s tracks are also where its at! I’ll hopefully put “I Say, I Love You,” “Posin’,” “Sweet Lovin’ Mama,” and other personal favorites up soon, but why not start with “Looking Back”? While you can’t tell from this wax that he’s one of the best-dressed, most handsome cats, it does hint at the fact that he’s thee baddest guitarists, lyricists, vocalists, etc ever. In this Chuck Berry-ish destroyer (reminds me particularly of “Nadine” – which came out three years later), Watson spots a fine black-haired lady with matching shoes and handbag and nylon hose on the street and checks to see if she’s checking him out checking her out…
