Jive Five, “Rain” (Beltone, 1963): Today’s NY Night Train Youtube Party Platter

NY Night Train’s Daily Party Platter YouTube just kicked into gear last week! Visit the playlist every day to see what’s cookin’…

This was recorded directly from the original 1963 Beltone 45, Jive Five’s “Rain”.

Drip…. Drop…. Drip… Drop….

I think its safe to say this intro is lifted from Irma Thomas’ “It’s Raining” as “Rain” came out a few months after… Today’s Party Platter isn’t very party and is the first ballad I’ve put up here (and also my first doo wop!). I’m doing so because if you’re in New York I hope it’ll be a fitting soundtrack to our lousy weather – plus variation is something to strive for…

Deep in the eye of the first doo wop revival, The Jive Five had a huge hit with “My True Story” in 1961. Within a year two members passed away. So for this record so lead vocalist Eugene Pitt and o.g. tenor Thurmon “Billy” Prophet are joined here by three members of Harlem doo wop legends The Cadillacs. And,… hear that? They’re killing it…

This is another 45 I just picked up at Detroit’s Peoples’ Records and its really getting me through days like this. I hope it does the same for you…
