This is not an everyday show! Hailu is the man! Mergia made his name in the 1970s playing keyboards and concocting an eternally fresh blend of funk, jazz, and Ethiopian sounds in Walias Band. In the 1980s Hailu went solo and started experimenting with synthesizers and accordion you hear on Awesome Tapes From Africa’s LP release of the composer’s 1985 cassette “Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument.” And he’s never stopped challenging himself and creating vital music!
