Photographer JACKIE ROMAN‘S shots of this holiday JAMES BROWN-themed SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF! JIMMY HILL AND THE ALLSTARZ BAND got the night started right. This big funky showband features musicians known for their work with Wilson Picket, Clarence Carter, Baby Washington and more. The highlight of their set was two electrifying performances by CHARLES BRADLEY under his BLACK VELVET aka JAMES BROWN JR alter-ego – convincingly singing and dancing his way through some of the GODFATHER’S best with his powerful voice and wild stage moves. Next JONATHAN TOUBIN came out and turned four hours of straight original JAMES BROWN productions on 45 (plus a handful of JB covers). Around 1:30am the usual DANCE-OFF went down. This time special guest JAMES CHANCE, the white James Brown and godfather of No Wave music, selected the contest songs, danced, and played his horn – climaxing at the conclusion of the contest with a full performance of the Contortion’s iconic take on “I Can’t Stand Myself”! Mighty FIne’s Steve Myers helped JT MC and the judges were dancer CLAUDIA DE SERPA SOARES, performer DEE DEE DAME, TV On The Radio’s JALEEL BUNTON, Dirty Three’s JIM R WHITE, world-famous guitar hero MATT SWEENEY, Cartoon Jerk NATE TURBOW, Nothing Changes’ NIKKI SNEAKERS, the official baritone saxophonist of all of NYC PAULA HENDERSON, and legendary Back Door Man PHAST PHREDDIE! As always 1st place got $100 cash and 2nd was a $75 gift certificate at METROPOLIS VINTAGE! Another uncommon New York Night Train party that will not soon be forgotten!
