Hakim,
The Lion of Egypt and his Egyptian Orchestra with special guest
Karina Pasian – Central Park Summerstage 3PM FREE
The free
summer parks events have given quite a bit of balance to my musical
education. Of the extensive and diverse list of free concerts all
over town each year, the world music shows are always a chance to
catch something exotic for free. Today, at the Mecca of all summer
park venues, Central Park Summerstage, you hear the roar of “The
Lion of Egypt,” Hakim.
Performing a contemporary pop take on the Egyptian folk genre sha’bi,
the Lion’s charisma and catchy percussion-heavy dance pop
has made him one of Egypt’s biggest stars. His live performances
are famous for thier marathon length and sweaty energy. An ideal
afternoon in the park…

And, while
we’re on the international pop tip, I might as well keep some
sort of thematic continuity – which won’t be much of
a stretched as tonight and tomorrow New York is fortunate enough
to host one of Japan’s Yura Yura Teikoku. Whereas the Lion
plays densely layered dance music, Yura Yura wound up rock stars
in their native land via a skeletal lightly psychedelic rock route.
After achieving mainstream success after years underground, in addition
to their pop songs, the trio continues to explore a variety of styles.
Clearly not among Japan’s most adventurous, their most popular,
but most boring songs, jangle in the vein of either early Echo and
the Bunnymen or Gun Club. But their best stuff is informed by 1960s
Japanese pop, mid-period Velvet-een laid back urban blues, or more
experimental sounds. Though I missed last fall’s NYC shows,
the band’s first ever outside of Japan, they were, by many
accounts, amazing.
