Konono
No.1 - S.O.B.'s - $25
Yesterday I told you how
excited I was to watch Kinshasa’s electrified likembé
phenomenon, Konono
No. 1 for the first time. I wasn’t at all disappointed
except, as the band played in the middle of a three-band bill, they
were forced to cut it short. Their forty-five minutes or so consisted
of only two songs and the troupe was scaled down to six members,
founder Mawangu Mingiedi and two others on likembés and three
percussionists. The likembés this time were going through
American guitar amps – so the bass one went through an Ampeg
which sounded so deep that two people asked me where the bass player
was. The lead was plugged into a Vox that was super-driven. And
the vocals were all passed through their trademark megaphones. It
sounded completely unique and amazing. The band pushed their tiny
small polyrhythmic cycles into infinite variation – elevating
the diverse audience into a unified trance. I try not to recommend
the same thing two days in a row, but, if you’ve never caught
Konono before, this is something you should witness, and, if you
did see ‘em, here’s your chance to watch them really
spread out.
