Prof Murder

If you can't beat the heat... join it...

HippieFest: Dr. Hook, Rare Earth, Mitch Rider, Country Joe McDonald, Terry Sylvester, Joey Molland, Mountain with Leslie West and Corky Laing – Asser Levy Park (West 5th and Surf Avenue) 7:30PM FREE
You could go to HippieFest (isn’t that a much more refreshingly straightforward name than all of the other ones?z). You could see the dude from Badfinger and the dude from The Hollies, but Dr. Hook, Rare Earth, and Country Joe for free. But if I end up dragging my soggy ass all the way down there in this heat, you better believe it’ll be for a little Mitch Rider and a lot of Mountain.

Bill Frisell, Morrison and Woodring, The Moonlighters – Prospect Park Bandshell $3
Also outside and early is consistently imaginative and masterful guitar legend Bill Frissell in Prospect Park. Morrison and Woodring will be doing visuals and sounds. And TX gal gone good, Bliss Blood of Painteens fame will be opening the festivities with her soulful acoustic Hawaiian swing quartet, The Moonlighters.

The Meters – Nokia Theater Times Square $45
As for The Meters… c’mon? It doesn’t get much funkier than that. This ain’t The Funky Meters or any other other half-assed assemblage. This is the original lineup of Art Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste, George Porter, Jr. and Lei Nocentelli. They got together at Jazzfest last year and apparently cook as spicy as ever (duh?). I could recommend nothing higher, but, if you don’t have the forty-five bills plus service charge, my top pick tonight is…

Professor Murder Record Release, Free Blood, DJ Caps and Jones – The Cake Shop
The most practical pick of the night: Professor Murder’s record release. That’s right, one of the bands in the local indie scene that get folks to shake it down have recorded their tracks for future sociologists to research and catalogue upon. The new capsule is entitled …Rides the Subway and should be a real mover. Speaking of which the fantastic sweaty dance party trio Free Blood is warming everybody up… as if they need to get any hotter… DJ Caps and Jones’ll be shakin’ the basement throught the evening.
