NICK Zinner v NICK Ray & ZACH Lipez!

Nick Zinner, who is of course the guitar stylist best known for his trademark hair-raising sonic sophistication in Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as Head Wound City, Bright Eyes, Challenge of the Future, Unitard, etc., and his soulful and often conceptual photography, has found time to also excel at rocking the people from behind dusty and rusty turntables throughout the greater downtown area. Tonight he will be reunited with his old friend, lover, and collaborator Zach Lipez (remember local literary classic Slept In Beds?), poet, DJ, local celebrity, and vocalist for the likes of Fresh Kills, Bright and Desperate Sparks, and Candy Darlings. The two will face a formidable DJ opponent hailing from Memphis, Nick Ray, of Viva l'American Death Ray Music, 68 Comeback, The Limes, 100 Eyes, FTC, and other marks of musical distinction. Ear biting action is sooo 20th Century!

THE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER: PAULA HENDERSON AND JIM WHITE!

My distinguished guest DJs tonight are two of Australia's finest exports to the New York music scene. Soulful baritone saxophonist Paula Henderson, who currently leads the legendary downtown trio Moisturizer and her solo project Secretary, is also a member or Reverend Vince Anderson's Love Choir, Gregory Tate's Burnt Sugar Arkestra, and moonlights with everybody and their mamas. She used to also play with James Chance and the Contortions, Tadanosion, Gogol Bordello, The Vanity Set, and a variety of others. The other guest DJ is one my favorite drummers, Jim White of Dirty Three fame, also a current member of Catpower and White Magic, has played in Nick Cave's solo band, a few Will Oldham projects, Smog, and too many other outfits to list. A couple of amazing musicians with exquisite taste and an desire to get ya down... low down... R ya gonna b there?

KID CONGO POWERS spins bad music for bad people...

The gigantic tone of Kid Congo Powers’ open-tuned guitar is one of the more readily identifiable sounds in the history of underground rock. Best known for his contribution to the development of the contemporary ambient, noise, and rock guitar with The Gun Club, The Cramps, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in the 1980s, Kid’s spent the last fifteen years as a sideman (Make-Up, Mark Eitzel, Angels of Light, etc.), as a partner in Congo Norvell and Kid and Khan, a member of garage rock supergroup Knoxville Girls, and, most recently, the leader of Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds. Not only has Kid played with some of the best bands of all time, but that he did so during their finest hours (Psychedelic Jungle, Las Vegas Story, Tender Prey, etc). Tonight Kid will bust out rock, schlock, soul, glam, no wave, and other trashy curiosities...

SONGS OF SATAN & OTHER DELIGHTS W/PETE FROM EARLY MAN.

Local man-about-town Micki Pellerano is debuting his new experimental occultist film Hermatic Trilogy tonight. To celebrate, the NYNT DJ's've pulled songs about witches, spells, black masses, mojo hands, black cats, and, of course, the giant canon of works about the man downstairs himself. We've enlisted the help of Pete from one of the finer 21st Century metal bands, Early Man, to be our Virgil - leading us through mountain of metalic portraits of everyone's favorite fallen angel. We got plenty of related material from across the generic spectrum.for headbanging, communing with the dead, selling yr soul, or just burn baby burning in a disco inferno. Micki is willing to forgive our naive and playful go at mysticism because the music's that good. Come get a heapin' helping of the dark stuff before we return to the typical sweat of our weekly art-damaged soul dance parties...

KYP MALONE
Williamsburg townie, father, and possessor of one of the most distinctive hair styles in the tri-state area, and accomplished singer/songwriter to boot, Kyp Malone is best known for his adventurous guitar work with TV on the Radio. Tonight Kyp joins us in the booth to play an eclectic mix of esoteric sounds that transcend both time and space... If you're appreciative, and he's feeling generous, Kyp may just share the key to an entirely different dimension with you. You never can tell...

LOVE STINKS PARTY:

On this, the lamest of Hallmark holidays, New York Night Train DJs spin from the canon of songs about why romantic love is a low-down dirty dawg from hell - all the choice cuts that involve break-ups, abandonment, abuse, betrayal, good lovin' gone bad, bad lovin' gone worse, heartbreak, heartburn, and all the other sonic illustrations of why love hurts, love bites, and love stinks. A dirty mixed bouquet. But not to fret - not only wil you find a couple of tears in your beers - but we'll also get down on it.... A makeshift heartbreak hotel. A funky refuge from the dinners, flowers, and hand-holding of the Valentines Day world outside. Plus, free soul kisses from the doormman and bartender. Special guests. FUN! NO COUPLES ALOUD!...

TARDY GRAS W/DJ GOOFY aka JIM SCLAVUNOS
Some call it Ash Wednesday, but those of us who live our life at least a day behind call it "Tardy Gras." If you either missed it or don't wanna Fat Tuesday to end, we've recruited Big Chief Jim Sclavunos to help lay the Iko Iko across your forehead. While Jim is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' percussionist, Grinderman's drummer, and The Vanity Set's leader, you may also know him from Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8-Eyed Spy, Sonic Youth, Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton, The Cramps, Congo Norvell, Gunga Din, etc. This notorious night-trippin' international playboy is totin' a mojo bag full o' the Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya and other seasonal delights. Wear ashes on your forehead and get a surprise. And you know what to do if if you want beads. Just like being there - only cheaper, easier, and later. What a difference a day makes.... More fun than a barrel-full of mudbugs.

GRINDERMAN Record Release and Listening Party w/Jim Sclavunos

Tonight we celebrate the release of Grinderman's brilliant self-titled debut album with a listening party, giveaways, and guest DJ sets by the band's drummer Jim Sclavunos. Grinderman is a playfully heavy and intense new supergroup featuring Sclavunos, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, and Martyn Casey. Jim is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' percussionist and The Vanity Set's leader. You may also know him from Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8-Eyed Spy, Sonic Youth, Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton, The Cramps, Congo Norvell, Gunga Din, etc. NYNT is extremely excited as Grinderman is,the best album we've heard this year. Despite the fact that it's conceived and performed by some of our favorite rock legends, the album still exceeds everyone's expectations.

SOUL PARTY #2

The Secret Society for the Soul Party Revival NYC Chapter Local 23 continues our mission with a second experiment at MOTOR CITY, entitled simply "SOUL PARTY #2." NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN WEDNESDAY will this time experience a stylistic shift towards the realm of 60s soul, girl groups, pre-funk, with an occasional R&B-oriented mod or garage cut. Due to our surprise successes with the material last time, we'll also be pumping in an extra dose of 1950s music - R&B (particularly the New Orleans variety), doo wop, and the occasional faster blues dance number. Jack Martin's dance-off competition will be in effect at midnight - get their early if you wanna compete. We hope to use our significant stockpile of '45s to find out whether or not we can make Motor City get down hard and heavy mid-week. A success tomorrow would be a large step for us and a small step towards our goal of turning New York into a disco inferno. Feel free to come participate, observe, or merely listen....

GUEST DJ: BOB BERT

We are proud to bring back our very first NYNT Motor City guest DJ, Bob Bert. Since the Conductor is away on business, he has entrusted this subterranean music legend with the reins of his entire night. Bert is of course best known for his inimitable drumming during his years as a member of seminal New York Noise bands like Sonic Youth (the star of “Death Valley 69,” etc) and Pussy Galore (Right Now!, etc.), and, later, Action Swingers, Chrome Cranks, and Knoxville Girls. He also fronted Bewitched in 1980s and early 1990s (check out their new compilation!) and spent many years publishing the stellar underground music magazine BB Gun. He's currently a member of the supergroups Int’l Shades (or IS) and Size Queens. Bob will be spinning the finest standards and obscurities from downtown's grimy underbelly, 1970s to the present.

GUEST DJ: KID CONGO POWERS

GUEST DJ: JAIKO SUZUKI
This week we're thrilled to present drummer/dancer/film-maker/artist/ex-mermaid Jaiko Suzuki behind the booth. In this extensive and by no means complete string of credits, I neglected to mention the fact that Jaiko's also a bit of an internationally renowned DJ - best known for her monthly Mon Mon Mon Amour night at La Caverna (a Japanese themed go go night in a cave-themed underground Italian restaurant), Jaiko also spins everywhere from musician-littered Brooklyn dives to prestigious cultural centers. Her tastes are eclectic - so you don't know what to expect - except for the ubiquitous strong groove.

GIBBY HAYNES v. CURTIS BROWN present psych and heavy duty r'n'r

Gibby Haynes, a massive cultural force who should require no introduction, is the rock legend who led one of the most compelling bands of all time, The Butthole Surfers. In addition to his solo work with Gibby Haynes and His Problem and his electro project The Jack Officers, he's has collaborated with everyone from Ministry to Moby to Johnny Depp. The lord of contemporary Texas psychedelia will employ the trippiest music ever made tp both blow your mind and make you dance at the same time.

Ashville, NC transplant Curtis Brown is the leader of aggressively bootieful Brooklyn hard rock outfit Bad Wizard. For some years now the Wiz has been churning out thick sheets of metal with the dirt of The Stooges, the speed of Motorhead, and the twang of Skynnard, the heavyness of Sabbath, and the immediacy of the MC5. Curtis will be burning down the barn teaching you to worship the choicest cuts from the golden rock'n'roll cow.

Thanksgiving with Stu Spasm and the Skeleton Boy!

Stu Spasm is of course the Australian rock legend who was not only the mastermind behind such infamous ugly rock outfits as Lubricated Goat and Crunt, but also played in seminal Australian bands featuring Tex Perkins - like the Beasts of Bourbon, Salamander Jim, etc. The Skeleton Boy is a local photographer/filmmaker whose footage can be found in the upcoming Gun Club documentary, the bassist for Woman, and a stylish man about town who continues to possess one of the city's most distinctive haircuts. Tonight they meet up not only to celeberate America's favorite holdiay about sitting down with your enemy before you wipe them out for good, but also to publicly proclaim their affection for one another. The duo will spin lots of noise and Stu will pick up the mic and croon hits pinned by himself and others.

Excepter's John Fell Ryan vs. Ghost Exit's Chris Anderson

John Fell Ryan is not only the mastermind behind one of the most consistently challenging entities of the contemporary sonic landscape, Excepter, but he was also a longterm original member of infamous uptown improvisors No Neck Blues Band. Chris Anderson is the leader of the now legendary Social Registry band Ghost Exits and currently performs with FTC. In addition to their many musical achievements, both are also veteran DJ's of the highest caliber.A unique paring to say the least.

The New York Night Train DJ's

You got it, this week I'm my own special guest celebrity DJ. While I typically only roll in and do a short set here and there so my guests can get at it, tomorrow I'm making a special trip to the storage space to lay out some serious vinyl grill work across yr teeth all night long. I'm thinkin' funky art phag dirty dance party music? That esoteric distopian swayzee soundtrack? "Cry to Me" with a Mecco makeover, a Roland Howard guitar solo, an Allen Ravenstine synth noise, and a Jaki Liebezeit beat - all through the vocal effects of Gibby Haynes? I'm talkin' the whitest of chocolate christmases ever cooked up and melting through the other side of the sub-equatorial water flushing in the wrong direction - dehydrated and rehydrated once more, leaking out of the speakers, and crawling up the wall, across the floor, up in yr pants... Makin' u wanna dance... Are you with me or against me? If you're dismissing me as a madman, an even better reason to come is that I've invited a collection of NYNT's favorite DJs for cameos throughout the night. Or that both the Finnish Harry and the Texas Harry'll be manning the ship and catering to all of your desires beyond the sonic realm... We rokk 'til four and leave you wantin' more...

Welcome back VIETNAM with DJ Ivan Sunshine

Welcome local heroes Vietnam back home with the eclectic party selections of thr band's Ivan Sunshine and surprise guests. For those of you not familiar, Vietnam are a local Williamsburg institution that currently records for both the Kemado and Social Registry labels. The post-Velvet downer rock of the era when the band recorded for Vice has gradually morphed into the dark elegent classicism that appears on both their recent twelve-inches and their upcoming full-length debut. Not only are you certain to find the boys' pretty faces in local watering holes for the next few weeks, but also on the cover of this month's Fader. Fancy lads indeed. Speaking of fancy, while you may also remember Mr. Sunshine from the seminal Social Registry band Ghost Exits or Moon and Moon, he's also a bad mutha behind the wheels of steel.

Christmas with Curtis Brown and Jeff Jensen

In Japan the hand can be used as a knife but will it work on this watermelon? Ashville, NC transplant Curtis Brown is the outlaw leader of greasy Brooklyn rock starz Bad Wizard. Tonight he is being paired with his regular tennis opponent Jeff Jensen, formerly of the legendary Low Down Dirty D.A.W.G.S., and, of late, the golden throat behind romantic prettyboy goth duo, The Jewish. Jensen also has a crank call album coming out on Matador next year. Tonight's rare glimpse into what lies beneath the luxurious veneer of two enigmatic figures marks the first ever public display of the best minds of our generation's unique theological, socio-economic, and phylogenial perspective on everyone's favorite holiday... A sonic/cultural volley of this magnitude has never been experienced by the civilized world. And its not sold in stores. But that's not all. Curtis claims he has formulated a serve Jeff can't return. For all you orphans who couldn't find your way back to whatever BFE town you're ashamed to hail from, you'll also get.... bad tidings, Noel, falalalalalalalala, and more. You can't go home again... Order now while supplies last.
