Archie Bell and Mighty Hannibal, The Dansettes, The Fabulous Soul Shakers - McCarren Park Pool FREE

I don’t have a whole lotta time to tell ya what’s what today, but clearly, once again, there’s no way you can lose at McCarren Park Pool’s free show. Today is perhaps the most interesting pool party yet, offering up two of the most colorful figures in R&B history, Archie Bell and Mighty Hannibal. Archie Bell, who is of course the voice behind the tireless and immortal “Tighten Up,” had quite a substantial career with loads of fine get-down anthems and slow jams, from the late 1960s "(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown," "I Can't Stop Dancing," and “World Without Music” to the mid-1970s “I Could Dance All Night,” “Sould City Walk,” and “Let’s Groove.” The career of Mighty Hannibal, the turbaned Atlanta phenomenon who also recorded earlier under the name Jimmy Shaw (“Big Chief Hug-Um An' Kiss-Um”) and, later under King Hannibal, stretched from the doo-wop and early R&B era to the soul and funk periods. Finding fame with his simple metaphorical mid-1960s novelty mid-1960s dance hits like “Jerkin’ The Dog” and “Fishin’ Poll,” Hannibal is perhaps best known for his anti-war number, “Hymn No. 5.” After he quit pimping and dope in the early 1970s, he then recorded a number of awesome socially conscious hits involving not only the war but drugs and urban problems. Locals girl group The Dansettes are gonna do their own set and back up these living legends who have made your world and mine a much funkier place.
