Peter Brotzmann / Han Bennink - Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center (107 Suffolk) 8PM and 10PM $20/($10 students and seniors)

Look down below, there’s nary a lame show tonight, from sure things like Wolf Eyes, John Weise, and Prurient/Thurston Moore (see yesterday), to Serena Maneesh and Bardo Pond, to Lisa Germano, and Tara Jane O’Neil to John Zorn, to adventure picks like Brother Reverend (check out their NYNT review), theremenist Arman Ra, and hard rock band Felix Unger.

Today I’ve decided to bring your attention to a rare collaboration between two towering figures in contemporary music, multi-instrumentalist/percussionist Han Bennink and woodwind/reed man Peter Brotzmann. The two began collaborating in the late 1960s. They collaborated on the landmark Machine Gun (1968) in Brotzmann’s octet. They wound up cutting a number of records as a trio in the 1970s with pianist Fred Van Hove before playing as a duo. Their last waltz in 1980 was documented in The Atsugi Concert, was a 1980 performance. They reunited recently and recorded Still Quite Popular, which shows they’ve lost neither any of their chemistry or wild intensity.

If you at all are interested in this type of avant improvisational music, I highly recommend this duo. A rare treat…
