Plastic
People of the Universe, Gary Lucas & Gods & Monsters - Knitting
Factory Main Space
Definitely
my pick for the entire week. Plastic
People of the Universe are of course the Prague 1968-ers
who existed illegally and underground until disbanding in the mid-1980s
and re-emerging during 1989’s Velvet Revolution. Some of the
bandmembers and their followers were even notoriously imprisoned
in the 1970s for their uncompromising radical art. While perhaps
a bit smoother than its earlier incarnations, the Plastic People
have aged well, still exploring while retaining many Zappa/Beefheart
elements. And speaking of Beefheart, you can only wonder why Beefheart
sideman Gary Lucas’s
Gods and Monsters aren’t more famous. Not only
is Lucas one of the most under-appreciated of contemporary guitar
legends, but he now performs backed by a proto-punk supergroup featuring
Television drummer Billy Ficca, Modern Lovers bassist Ernie Brooks,
and his fellow Modern Lover, Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison.
Lucas is never less than interesting and can be utterly electrifying.
A bunch of folks that struggled to create many of the better things
about our little world and continue to make exciting art. Give it
up for ‘em.
