No Neck Blues Band, Psychic Ills, Volcano the Bear – Hinthouse (638 W 131st Street btw Broadway & 12th)

This is exciting! The No Neck Blues Band is opening up the Hinthouse tonight for one of their increasingly rare parties. The good news isn’t only that the fathers of the current NYC improvisation scene are taking you along on one of their spellbinding voyages into the increasingly more familiar unknown. And no… it isn’t that one of my favorite bands on the planet, who I write about with perhaps the most frequency, Psychic Ills, are gonna take you on a more deliberate trip. But the especially good news is that legendary British post-dadaists Volcano the Bear have arrived stateside and are kicking off one of their infrequent US tours tonight. Instead of attempting to describe the rumblings of this Leicester trio of pranksters, it’s best to simply state that their sonic wanderlust has led to their occupation of far too many time zones to be pinned down. Once you think you’ve located them, they’re already somewhere else – behind you, above you, teasing you, slithering through your legs while you search for them on the ceiling, slipping through your fingers like a fistful of milk, thumping you behind the ear and appearing in front of you as you turn around, sticking their tongues out, egging you on… But I dare you to try and grab a hold of their early Residential absurdity and industrial experiments or late Syd Barrett-esque folk, minimal synth modulations, ragas, and general etherea. Your struggles against their elusiveness will be futile. Like No Neck, Volcano has prolifically churned out so much strange, beautiful, challenging, eclectic, utterly unique music over the last decade or so that it would not be an overstatement to call them a vital force in Twenty-first Century experimental music.

In short, climb on the 1 Train early.
