Caught
In A Trap And I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby
Matador 1998
This
widely acclaimed minimal record by The American Music Club singer/songwriter
Mark Eitzel has a pretty nifty greater New York area lineup that
includes a rhythm section of Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley
and Yo La Tengo’s James McNew. The trademark electric guitar
stylings of Kid Congo Powers, the one who doesn’t live in
Hoboken, help paint the atmosphere on “If I Had A Gun,”
“Goodbye,” and “Cold Light Of Day."

The Invisible Man
Matador 2001
Three
years after Caught In A Trap And I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love
You Too Much, Baby, American Music Club frontman Mark Eitzel
made another sparse classic, The Invisible Man. The big
aesthetic difference here is that the songs combine his traditional
organic instrumentation with all kinds of loops, samples, and synths.
This time Kid only plays on one song – but it’s a fine
one – “To the Sea” – about the death of
Jeff Buckley.
